Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical elements including neodymium, dysprosium, and lithium; are critical components required to manufacture advanced electronics, defense systems, and green technologies like electric vehicle batteries and wind turbines. Currently, the global supply chain of REEs relies heavily on traditional land-based mining and chemical smelting, processes that are highly concentrated in a small number of nations. Biometallurgy is an alternative metallurgical branch that utilizes microorganisms, such as bacteria or fungi, to extract, refine, and recover metals. This process, often referred to as ""bioleaching,"" allows for the extraction of REEs from low-grade rock ores, historical mine tailings, and electronic waste, bypassing the need for high-temperature smelting or new open-pit excavations.
